Annotation

This paper deals with Quaker's policy of linguistic divergence, preserving, since the 16OOs, 'thou/thee' as a divergent speech marker in Quaker Plain Speech. This policy was unknowingly founded on a contradiction between their missionary purpose and the exclusivity of ethnic speech markers.
