Annotation

A distinction is made between speaker reference (the referring done by people) and semantic reference (the referring done by expressions). D. argues that the two uses of definite descriptions (attributive and referential; see K.S.Donnellan (1966: 'Reference and definite descriptions')) involve two different semantic functions: the description conveys speaker reference only in one of them.
