This study of listeners' responses to prosodic factors, examines the effect of the presence and position of emphatic stress on interpretations of utterances that contain modal auxiliaries; explores possible sex differences in the responses to these utterances; and investigates impression formation in relation to sex differences and the position of emphatic stress.
