He offers hypotheses about the purposes and effects of illocutionary acts, the results of a study of illocutionary acts performed by three-year-old children, a typology of their illocutionary acts, a methodology for identifying each type, a description of some pragmatic strategies the children employ, and examples of sociolinguistic rules governing children's use of illocutionary acts.
