This paper on the semantics of locative expressions distinguishes two layers of semantically and often also morphologically manifest localisers and modalisers, which tend to form a unit of either an adposition or a case marker. This theory is shown to explain the contrast between English and Finnish regarding directionals. The orientation of locatives is also discussed.
