This study explores politeness phenomena reflected in Ecuadorian Spanish telephone conservations within the framework of Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. It also examines motivations underlying politeness strategies and politeness features at the macro-level. It is argued that history, social psychology and social anthropology could additionally account for some aspects of linguistic politeness.
