This article explores how a passive form of elaborative inferences can be implemented in a connectionist way, using Shastri's and Ajjanagadde's (1993) model for reflexive reasoning. It is argued however that a more distributed model, as proposed by Sun (1994), is better equipped to deal with the shift of attentional states. Thus its implications are examined in order to construct a cognitive architecture for text comprehension.
