D. and F. propose measurement techniques and research strategies for the study of face-to-face interaction. Individual differences in brief conversations are described; this study is said to represent the 'external-variable approach'. The 'structural approach' is illustrated with special reference to speaking turns. A general conceptual framework for ordering and understanding the phenomena involved, is sketched.
