This paper explores the effects of some major individual and contextual variables on the learning of English as a foreign language in primary and secondary schools in the Basque Country. The individual variables include intelligence, gender, motivation and importance given to English. The contextual variables consider socioeconomic and sociocultural status, classes outside school and parents' knowledge of English.
