Annotation

This paper surveys the history of Spanish-English language controversy in Puerto Rico from the 1898 US takeover of the island to the 1991 and 1993 laws that successively eliminated and restored English as an offical language, with special focus on the shifting ways in which language served as a symbol to differentiate groups with opposing political views.
