The papers in this collection deal with language issues associated with the teaching of English and French in five African countries. These issues are arranged into four sections: language policy issues (in Tanzania); English language teaching for academic and specific purposes (in Tanzania, Zaire and Zimbabwe); research in the teaching of reading; and research into the role of English and French as media of instruction (in Botswana and Burundi).
