This review of the contributions to the 1995 Bilingualism Colloquium in Brunei Darussalam, comments briefly on five cross-cutting themes: the role of language policy/planning in educational reform; a concern with mother tongue and skill transfer across languages; model versus 'cycle of discovery' importing; problems related to the implementation of innovative education programmes; and the contributions of classroom discourse research.
