Annotation

This paper explores the impact of Macauly's Minute on education (1835) on British colonial language-in-education policy in 19th century India, against the background of the Orientalist-Anglicist controversy of the 1830s over content and medium of Indian government instruction. This minute proposes the creation of a class of anglicised Indians, to serve as cultural intermediaries.
