This paper deals with South African classroom discourse in six newly integrated schools in the Durban area of KwaZulu-Natal, as sites of struggle between competing discourses that construct, maintain and change social identities at communinty and society level. It is argued that the combination of these micro-level discourses with current multilingual and former bilingual policies have the potential to construct quite different national identities.
