E. examines the interpretive role of the reader and its interaction with textual strategies determining a 'model reader', and discusses the application of a theory of possible worlds (reformulated for the goals of a semiotics of narrative texts) to several textual and intertextual problems (e.g. the relations between the world of reference and the world of the fabula, or the relations of the characters to each other).
