This paper discusses two factors that stimulate Flemish nationalist opposition against European unification. First there is the perceived threat of the Flemish minority in the constantly internationalizing European capital, Bruxelles. Secondly, there is the growing importance of English as language of international communication within the European community. The paper also addresses issues related to a broader pan-Dutch movement.
