Annotation

The author defends the thesis that ethnomethodology (as interpretive sociology) better accounts for cultural competence than does ethnosemantics (which loses sight of too many pragmatic factors). To illustrate his point he presents an ethnosemantic study of terms for Canadian doctors, an investigation which he then goes on to criticize from an ethnomethodological point of view.
