This paper examines how a Japanese newspaper with national circulation, the Mainichi Shinbun, reports the Ehime Maru-Greenville collision (february 9, 2001). It is argued that a satisfactory account of referential forms requires an understanding of the referential choices governed by the writer's emotivity.
