This volume combines theoretically focused papers on the problem of labeling Mesoamerican and Andean traditions of recording information without using words as 'writing', with topical papers on aspects of Maya, Aztec and Mixtec pictographic traditions and the nonphonetic, noniconic Inca QUIPU.
