The six papers in this volume contribute to the field of sub-Saharan Arabic history and linguistics. They deal with the cultural and historical origin of the Baggara Arabs; provide a comparative compilation of previous studies of Sudanic Arabic; discuss the migration of the Awlad Suleiman from Fezan to Kanem; and describe Arabic military pidgin varieties that developed in Chad and the Sudan at the end of the 19th century.
