Annotation

Although Yoruba doesn't classify (pro)nouns in terms of gender, there is evidence for gender marking in personal attributive names. This paper discusses the characteristics of these gender markers; explores why the tonal pattern LLH is more common than the LHH pattern; and examines on what base parents choose names for girls from either the male-based LLH or the exclusively female-based LHH set ?
