Annotation
This paper investigates why boys often appear to be more confident and expert than girls at speaking out in classroom contexts. Their ability to mobilize two discursive practices, that is the use of a sidekick and a support group and the use of humour, provides boys with more opportunities than girls to constitute themselves as 'effective' public speakers.
