This article surveys research on bilingualism and traces the current discussion on models of bilingualism to the contributions of L. Vygotsky and A.R. Luria. It proposes that a modular approach to the study of the different aspects of bilingual development provides a way to find a broader common ground for research findings and interpretations that currently appear to be irreconcilable.
