Over the past 20 years, since the introduction of Basque in its schools, the regional Government of the Basque Autonomous Community has adopted a series of measures to counter the dominant co-occurrence of Spanish. This process led to the creation of an optional overarching programme for the normalization of the use of Basque in schools, called Ulibarri.
