This article describes the current sociolinguistic situation of the Sámi language(s), in particular in Northern Norway. After a brief description of the historical development, the article comments on issues, problems and practises relating to Sámi language politics and planning which are relatively novel, given the fact that Sámi as school and official language only exists since a few decades.
