Annotation

This paper deals with the intellectualization of South African languages within the context of the constitutional obligation to develop all, and especially the nine indigenous official languages. Despite many problems, research on strategies towards language intellectualization provides a strong sense of optimism that, with a clear national language policy and plan, intellectualization in South Africa is more likely to succeed than in most developing countries.
