Annotation

This paper provides a historical setting for discussions of language planning in three former British colonies. Together with the economic and military emergence of the United States in the 20th century, British colonialism is widely considered as the major reason for the global role of English today. It is also an indispensable element of discussions about imperialism in general and linguistic imperialism in particular.
