This paper deals with English second language teaching in Indian classrooms as a means for developing awareness of cultural diversity. This however demands both cognitive and affective engagement with teaching materials, and many textbooks have not yet reached this point. The article then presents a critical analysis of textbooks in Germany that begin to provide new approaches.
