Annotation

This paper shows that isolated communities, like the US Smith Island and the Lumbee Native American community, can be linguistically innovative and heterogeneous. Speakers in isolated communities are free to retain intra-dialectal variation and bring about internal innovations and isolated communities allow for the transmission of intricate patterns of intra-community variation and heighten their social semiotic importance.
