This study explores the role of gesture in itself and in conjunction with speech in constructing zones of proximal development for second language teaching and acquisition. The results demonstrate the important role of gesture in promoting language acquisition and in facilitating positive interaction, by helping to create a sense of shared social, symbolic, physical, and mental space.
