Annotation
This essay supports Egan's thesis that narratives play a very important role in young children's classroom learning, but suggests to consider narrative discourse as a family of discourses, intimately connected to the context of social activity structures in which they arise. It is suggested that narratives are both a symbolic means via which children construct knowledge and a research tool for examining children's knowledge construction.
