This longitudinal study examines the issues of gender and genre in relation to the writing development of 2 children in Australian "process writing" kindergarten and grade 1 and 2 classrooms. Results indicate that despite "free topic choice", the majority of children's written texts are of the observation genre, with a significant pattern of gender differences whereby boys reconstruct experience in terms of active world participation and girls in terms of passive experience observation.
