This longitudinal study explores how plot unit theory can increase our understanding of the development of the structure of children's fictional stories from kindergarten to fifth grade. Results across the 6 years of study show stronger trends towards increasing story length and plot connectivity and weaker trends towards increasing plot complexity, together with considerable variation in the individual development patterns.
