This article uses ideas about the relationship of language to its context, to explore the selections and functions of different sets of genres in different curriculum areas in junior secondary education. It is demonstrated that genre selection is functional and serves to lead students in different directions: from action to reflection or from reflection to action. It is argued that explicit knowledge about the use of different genres in different curriculum areas might facilitate teaching and learning processes.
