This study supports an interactionist approach that challenges current product-focused orientations, considering writing and reading as processes of negotiation. A brief analysis of a college freshman writer's essay shows some of the ways textual processes function to mediate context and cognition in written discourse, thus contributing to an integrated theory of writing and written communication.
