Annotation

Informed by the ethnography of speaking perspective, this paper focuses on an African American female urban community college teacher's talk, distinguishing between the language of control, curriculum, and critique. It is shown how this talk, which combines African American and Standard English language forms, serves the functions of communicating cognitive information, establishing and maintaining social relationships, and expressing the speaker's attitudes.
