Annotation

This article examines the home language maintenance strategies of three south Texas Mexican-American families of different socioeconomic levels and modes of life. Only the children in the rural family appear to have maintained native proficiency in Spanish, as a consequence of factors as their parents' insistence on the use of Spanish among themselves, the relative isolation of the family ranch, and frequent contact with monolingual Spanish-speaking Mexican relatives.
