Annotation

This study argues that the normative cultural literacy model, held by White, middle-class parents of kindergarten children, with emphasis on book reading as a prototypical literacy, marks the proponents' social class membership. In institutions designed to facilitate child and family literacy, teaching children "to read" is often secondary to the main purpose of reshaping families' moral character, especially that of nonmainstream and minoritized families.
