Annotation
This paper tests Wierzbicka's contention that some words have exact correlates in all languages, thus serving as a universal metalinguistic vocabulary. A test of a sample of first person pronouns against the four indexical functions, shows that there are several languages between which the first person is not perfectly translatable. Alternative gender indexings by third person singular pronouns are also documented.
