This paper briefly presents some key notions of cognitive grammar. It underscores the importance to linguistic semantics of our construals of a conceived situation, and examines why the nature of these imposed construals is largely 'invisible' to us. It is argued that the development of optimal accounts of semantic and grammatical structure is best conceived of as simultaneous, mutually informative processes.
