It is argued that as meanings, encoded in grammatical categories and in the lexicon, are language-specific, one needs universal semantic primitives, that provide constant and language-independent points of reference, to be able to compare grammatical categories across language boundaries. These claims are documented by an analysis of one area of grammar, usually associated with the term of 'evidentiality', in a number of different languages.
