This paper systematically compares functions of voice alternations in English, Chinese and biblical Hebrew, three genetically unrelated languages. It is argued that a typology of discrete functional types, when applied to more languages, would enable to characterize both objectively and simply the function of passive or 'passive-like' constructions.
