This paper shows that Japanese/Canadian English code-switching patterns in second generation Japanese in-group discourse, are conditioned by bilingual speech varieties, characterized in terms of base language. It is found that common word order is not necessary for the occurrence of intrasentential code-switching; borrowing doesn't constitute an alternative to intrasentential code-switching in the case of contact between two languages with different word order.
