This study proposes a definition of thematic structure which depends on the illocutionary aim of the parts of an utterance, considered as a message. Consequently, it proposes a test to verify the thematic structure of the utterance without removing it from its actual context and explores the application limits of such a test to particular syntactic constructions. It futher provides a procedural application of the test to written English clause complexes.
