This paper deals with a discordance in the interpretation of the same clause, oscillating between interrogative and independent relative, in Indo-European languages. An adequate description of indirect WH questions, necessitates an appropriate semantic characterization, verified in various pragmatic contexts. A contrastive framework, moreover, demonstrates the relevance of semantics and pragmatics in controlling linguistic stipulations, and in capturing broader generalizations and in abstracting language properties.
