Annotation
This study shows that European languages differ with regard to whether they have cleft constructions, which cleft constructions they have and what their discourse role is. Whilst English speakers use clefts, speakers of other European languages use particles and word order. The investigation gives rise to questions about the nature of WH pronouns in English and about what they share in interrogatives and in declarative clefts and non-clefts.
