This paper analyzes the English 'it-cleft' and 'WH-cleft' constructions and their Chinese equivalents, using a Systemic Functional Grammar approach. The analysis assigns participant roles to the participants in the process existing in the construction and demonstrates that a functionally-oriented and semantically-motivated approach contributes more to the understanding of the discourse function of focussing constructions than structure-based studies do.
