This study deals with errors in writings of Japanese undergraduate students of English, related to the use of intransitive verbs such as occur, happen, and suffer. It is shown that students tend to passivize intransitive verbs in sentences that imply affectedness or adversity, presumably because they associate adversity with the passive construction.
