Annotation

This paper surveys the different forms and usages of Dutch and English passives, arguing that the differences in form entail a difference in meaning, which in its turn explains the differences in usage. Thus the Dutch passive indicates that the causer's point-of-view should not be taken, whilst the English passive signals that the patient's point-of-view should be taken.
