This contrastive study describes Swedish modal particles as evidentials with meanings that refer to the source of knowledge and to the type and strength of evidence. It is argued that not all aspects of the meanings of Swedish modal particles can be analyzed as modal, as some need to be explained via a general theory of human communication.
